Robert De Niro Breaks Down While Talking About His Gay Dad’s Struggles With Coming Out

Robert De Niro is often mistaken for a hard ass because of the roles he plays in films, so it’s hard to imagine him with a soft side. But that’s exactly what he shows when opening up about his late, gay father, Robert De Niro Sr.

The 70-year-old actor tells his father’s entire story in an HBO documentary entitled Remembering the Artist that premiers on June 9th. In it, De Niro shares his father’s Matisse-style art and reads aloud from his diaries.

In an interview with Out magazine about the documentary, De Niro breaks down in tears as he recounts his father’s struggles with his sexuality.

“He probably was [conflicted] about his homosexuality, being from that generation. Especially from a small town upstate. I was not aware, much, or it. I wish we had spoken about it more. My mother didn’t want to talk about things in general, and you’re not interested when you’re a certain age,” the actor says.

De Niro himself had no misgivings about coming out on behalf of his dad, saying, “I felt I had to. I felt obligated… I thought about it, of course, but if you’re going to do something, you have to do it all the way. You can’t hide anything.”

Despite not living together, the father and son had a close bond. “We were not the type of father and son who played baseball together, as you can surmise. But we had a connection,” he said.

Watch a trailer for the actor’s moving documentary and watch it in full next month on HBO.

What makes a genius a genius?

According to these graphics, it's good time management.

Using Mason Currey's book Daily Rituals: How Artists Work - which draws on diaries and letters from the thinkers themselves - designer RJ Andrews has mapped out the comings and goings of some of history's most important figures, right down to the hour.

From Mozart to Freud and Darwin to Dickens, the waking, working and, in some cases, procrastinating of history's greatest minds are laid out for scrutiny.

From Balzac drinking 50 cups of black coffee a day, to Milton spending hours memorising the Bible, the results are not always as you would expect. The variation is also surprising, from Freud's 13 hours of work a day to Mozart's four, there is not, alas, a simple recipe for success.

Even so, people can now mimic the schedule of their intellectual heroes. Who knows, something might rub off.

How to Take Care of Dry Cracked Feet

May 30, 2014

Sandal season is starting, and so many of us have dry cracked feet that we are often embarrassed by putting our feet on display. You might even have considered visiting a podiatrist. In any major store you will find dozens of products promising to heal your heels, but how do you know which ones work? Why do your feet do this?

Your feet do not produce natural oils, they rely on sweat glands to moisturize them and keep them soft. There are several things that can keep your body from doing this itself, this includes diabetes, thyroid trouble, any chronic illness that affects your skin, edema, and aging. It can also be caused by bacteria, vitamin deficiencies, overexposure to water, shoes that don’t fit properly, and lack of air circulation around the feet.

Dry Cracked Feet Before and After

There are some easy at home remedies for dry cracked feet to try, and some good common sense rules of thumb to use. If your moisturizer or foot lotion lists its first ingredient as water, it’s not going to solve the problem. Water dries you back out. There are things probably in your fridge and kitchen cupboards right now that can put your feet on the path to smoothness.

  1. 1 cup of white vinegar to 2 gallons warm water, soak for 30-45 minutes once a week, rinse, dry, apply moisturizer and socks.
  2. 1/2 cup baking soda to 1 gallon warm water, stir until dissolved, soak 30-45 minutes, rinse, dry, apply moisturizer and socks.
  3. 1-2 gallons warm water, few drops tea tree oil, soak, rinse, dry, moisturize, apply socks – this works great if it’s from bacteria or fungus.
  4. 1-2 gallons warm water, 2-3 Tablespoons lemon juice, soak, rinse, dry, etc.

Instead of lotion try some olive oil, coconut oil, or any kitchen oil, you can add a drop or 2 of an essential oil to make it smell good if you like, make sure it is an essential oil and not a fragrance oil, most fragrance oils have an additive that makes them unsafe for skin application. One great mix is one Tablespoon olive oil and a few drops lemon juice, mix it up and rub it on. Always use clean cotton socks after, cotton will allow air to circulate while your feet soak up the moisture.

Enjoy your soft and smooth feet, and your comfortable summer shoes!

A man has been taken into custody after attacking Brad Pitt at the red carpet premiere of Maleficent, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

A police spokesperson tells THR a man jumped over the barricade at the El Capitan theater, and made contact with the actor before security guards wrestled him away. The man was taken into custody and booked for battery.

Police did not release a description of the suspect, but TMZ reports it was Vitalii Sediuk, the Ukrainian reporter whom Will Smith slapped after the prankster attempted to kiss him at the Russian premiere of Men in Black III. More recently he made waves at Cannes for hiding under America Ferrera's dress at the How to Train Your Dragon 2 premiere.

Facebook Encouraging Article

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band -he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .'

Lynne Cohen photographer dead at 69

May 20, 2014

Lynne Cohen, whose photographs of chilly, depopulated interiors earned her a reputation as one of this country’s most influential artists, has died after a three-year struggle with lung cancer. She was 69. Cohen, who won the inaugural Scotiabank Photography Prize in 2011, leaves behind an enviable list of career accolades that includes pieces in dozens of prominent collections worldwide and exhibitions at major museums here and abroad. She was a recipient of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Born in Wisconsin but living in Canada since 1973, Cohen, who was based in Montreal, was at the forefront of a photographic inquiry into the sterile environments we created in the modern era in which to live our lives. Her eye for the unforgiving surfaces of our thoroughly modern communal spaces — swimming pools and offices, lobbies and waiting rooms, military installations — highlighted, in an understated but insistent way, the absurdity of an esthetic with an unintentional dehumanizing effect. Cohen, who was the subject of a major survey exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art last year, has work in such prestigious collections as the National Gallery of Canada, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Her long-time Toronto dealer, Olga Korper, said in a statement that “we feel incredibly privileged to have worked with her and revelled in her tremendous character and passion for her work.”
